A seal top spoon is a type of eating utensil featuring a terminal shaped like a small flat seal, which was commonly used for wax impressions. They were particularly popular in England during the 16th and 17th centuries.

These items were typically cast in brass, latten, or pewter using sand-casting or mould methods, often hand-finished with hammering and filing before being stamped with a makers mark.

Authentication relies on examining the casting irregularities, wear patterns consistent with age, correct alloy composition, and verifying known makers marks against historical records.

An early metal spoon can be mounted in a shallow shadow box frame or displayed horizontally on a small stand within a glass-fronted cabinet to highlight its historic craftsmanship.

Preservation requires avoiding harsh chemical dips or aggressive polishing that remove historical patina. Dusting with a soft cloth and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax helps protect the surface from oxidation.
