Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This seventeenth-century William and Mary chest on stand combines practical storage with formal country house presence. Built from walnut and pine, the piece wears a warm brown finish complemented by cross-banding and polished brass teardrop handles and escutcheons. The upper section contains two small drawers over three graduated long drawers, resting on a base with an arched apron and six inverted-cup turned legs united by shaped stretchers. Standing 158 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, the furniture makes a striking statement in an entrance hall, bedroom, or living room. It provides generous drawer space while serving as an elevated display surface for decorative items or lighting in a traditional interior.

FAQs

A chest on stand is a form of storage furniture introduced in the late 17th century, comprising a chest of drawers mounted upon an openwork leg structure or stand. This design elevated drawers to a comfortable working height and reflected the period transitioning from simple armoires to complex drawer configurations.

Pieces from this era were primarily constructed using native woods such as walnut, oak, and pine, often finished with figured walnut veneers. Drawers featured hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings, brass teardrop handles, engraved keyhole escutcheons, and turned baluster legs joined by wavy stretchers.

Authentic pieces display period-specific characteristics such as hand-sawn timber marks, wide dovetail joints, thick wood veneers, and secondary timbers like oak or pine. Original hardware usually leaves distinct footprint oxidation on the drawer fronts, and leg turnings often feature baluster or inverted cup shapes.

A chest on stand serves as a focal piece in hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms, adding historical contrast against contemporary neutral walls. Its elevated frame allows light to pass underneath, making it suitable for spaces where heavy ground-level furniture might feel restrictive.

Keep walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or wood movement. Regular light dusting and an occasional application of beeswax polish will protect the patina and finish without building up harmful residues.
