An 18th-century hand-coloured engraving is a printed work produced from an engraved metal plate, typically copper, which was subsequently embellished with watercolour washes by hand to enhance the visual detail and tonal range.

These works were produced using laid rag paper, copper or steel plates for intaglio printing, oil-based inks, and water-based pigments for colouration, often housed in traditional timber frames with glass protection.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit plate marks indented into genuine laid paper, natural paper ageing, oxidisation of pigments, and fine line definitions characteristic of hand-engraved metal plates rather than modern dot-matrix or offset printing.

An antique engraving can be integrated into a room by pairing it with traditional wood finishes and neutral wall colours, or hung within a gallery wall arrangement alongside modern pieces to create a layered aesthetic.

To preserve antique paper, it should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing, ideally framed using acid-free mount boards and UV-filtering conservation glass.
