Classical bronze busts draw inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman sculptural traditions, experiencing a major revival during the Grand Tour period in the 18th and 19th centuries when travellers collected miniature copies of classical masterpieces.

Authentic pieces from this era are typically produced using the lost-wax casting method, featuring patinated bronze mounted upon plinths crafted from marble, slate, or alabaster.

Authentication involves examining the quality of the chasing, the depth and nuance of the patina, tool marks on the underside, and the mineral composition of the supporting plinth material.

These pieces function effectively as focal points on mantelpieces, libraries, or sideboards, contrasting against clean architectural lines or pairing with rich timber finishes.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to protect the metallic patina.
