Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Natural dye abrash across the field: hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches.
Barber-pole and serrated-leaf borders: traditional east Caucasian village weaving.
Flatweave kilim ends with hand-knotted fringe: original loom finish.
Even softening of the pile: many decades of gentle domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This antique Shirvan rug from the Caucasus dates to circa 1880, styled in the Caucasian tradition using hand-spun wool. The textile displays a pale rose field combined with a terracotta and cream colour palette, featuring stepped diamond medallions, serrated leaf borders, and geometric star motifs. Further visual details visible on the piece include blue, red, and dark brown accents, fringe finishes at both ends, and intricate multi-layered geometric guard borders framing the central design. Measuring 145 cm high by 101 cm wide, this small textile has been professionally cleaned and restored to showroom condition. Such a decorative piece suits various interior spaces seeking traditional pattern work and heritage character, functioning well as a floor covering in a study, hallway, or living room, or displayed as a wall hanging. The geometric motifs and polychrome diamonds bring traditional Caucasian artistry into an English Country House setting, coordinating naturally with antique or neutral furnishings.

Shirvan rugs originate from the southeastern Caucasus region, known for their fine hand-knotted wool construction, dense geometric patterns, and vibrant natural dye palettes.

Traditional Caucasian rugs are hand-woven using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and wefts, colored with natural plant-based and mineral pigments.

Authentic antique Shirvan rugs typically feature a low, tightly knotted wool pile, wool foundations, crisp geometric motifs such as stepped diamonds, and natural abrash colour variations.

Position the rug as a focal point in a neutral room to anchor contemporary furniture, or layer it over larger natural fibre carpets like sisal for added warmth and texture.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, and seek specialist cleaning for deep maintenance.
