This Georgian bachelor chest of drawers originates from the early George III period and is constructed in solid mahogany with a warm brown timber colour. The piece features a pull-out writing slide lined in vibrant green baize, two smaller stationery drawers, and flanking narrow drawers containing a pen tray and inkwell. Below are four further graduated drawers fitted with original brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons, all elevated upon traditional bracket feet with clean linear mouldings along the top surface edges. Measuring 77 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, the chest offers compact proportions for versatile placement. Today, this traditional gentleman's library piece serves effectively in a study, home office, or bedroom setting as both a functional writing desk and a practical storage chest. The pull-out writing surface provides a dedicated writing space while keeping stationery neatly concealed when closed, and the multiple graduated drawers accommodate everyday organisation needs. The warm timber tones and classic brass hardware blend naturally with both period and transitional interior decors, bringing heritage craftsmanship and useful surface space into contemporary homes.

FAQs

A bachelors chest is a compact, low chest of drawers originating in the 18th century, designed with a pull-out slide or fold-over top for writing or dressing.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid and veneered mahogany or walnut, featuring brass swan-neck handles, oak drawer linings, and baize-lined surfaces.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original brass backplates or keyholes, period-correct wood shrinkage, and a functional slide positioned above the primary drawers.

Its dual functionality allows it to serve as a bedside table, hallway accent piece, or compact home office desk in both traditional and contemporary settings.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect the timber.
