Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 18th century, a bachelors chest is a small, shallow chest of drawers designed for compact living quarters. Georgian examples are characterised by rich mahogany timber, brass hardware, bracket feet, and proportioned graduated drawers.

Georgian period pieces primarily utilised solid cuban or Honduras mahogany, often paired with pine or oak drawer linings. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail joints, cockbeaded drawer edges, cast brass swan-neck handles, and iron drawer locks.

Authentic period chests display evidence of hand-planing on the back boards, hand-cut irregular dovetails, and genuine oxidation or shrinkage marks on the timber. Original drawer linings typically show age-related wear, and hardware holes should match the eras fitting styles.

Compact Georgian chests serve as functional side tables, hallway storage, or bedside cabinets in contemporary spaces. Their warm mahogany tones provide an grounding contrast when paired with neutral paint palettes and modern art.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing along the grain to maintain the patination. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and sun bleaching.
