Early Victorian portraiture typically captures sitters in realistic, dignified poses, often reflecting the rising middle class and industrial prosperity through formal attire and restrained colour palettes.

These works were created using oil paint on stretched linen canvases, housed within timber frames featuring applied compo or plaster ornamentations finished with gold leaf or metallic gilt.

Authenticity is determined by examining canvas ageing, hand- forged stretcher frames, craquelure patterns in the oil layer, and traditional hand-carved or moulded gesso frames.

Pairing a historic portrait with contemporary minimalist furniture or placing it against a moody, saturated wall colour creates a striking visual contrast that anchors contemporary spaces.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, avoid touching the canvas surface, and consult a professional conservator for periodic cleaning of the varnish layer.
