19th century
For Sale by Cella
Description

A very rare pair of early 19th century English Regency gilt bronze 'Au Bon Sauvage' figural compotes or urns. Given there early date and English attribution these could be symbolic of the abolitionist movement. Each figure holds aloft a very decorative urn with a lobed base and trailing floral mounts. England, circa 1825.

This pair of early 19th-century English Regency compotes belongs to the Regency period and follows a grand design style. The pieces comprise gilt and patinated bronze, displaying a striking combination of gold and dark brown colouration. Each compote depicts a kneeling patinated figure with an open shirt mounted on a naturalistic floral domed base, supporting a classical fluted urn with a lobed base and trailing floral mounts. The square bases sit upon four scroll-shaped lion paw feet. The compotes measure 24 cm high, 14.5 cm wide, and 14.5 cm deep. These decorative tazzas suit placement atop a sideboard or console table in a formal living room or dining room to bring classical Regency character to an interior. The figural supports and chased leaf motifs create a sculptural silhouette, while the square bases provide stability. The combination of patinated bronze figures and bright gilt bronze mounts offers a strong visual contrast. The items function well as ornamental centerpieces or accent objects within a traditional home setting.

Originating in late eighteenth-century France and widely adopted during the Regency period, the design motif reflected contemporary cultural fascination with distant lands, romanticised representations of native populations, and emerging abolitionist sentiments through sculptural decorative objects.

These decorative objects were predominantly crafted from mercury-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, contrasted with chemically patinated dark bronze to highlight fine sculptural relief and anatomical detail.

Authentic Regency ormolu features hand-chased details, uneven micro-wear on high points, original threaded iron rods securing the component parts, and a characteristic warm lustre resulting from historical mercury gilding processes.

A pair of sculptural compotes can be displayed symmetrically on a dining table, mantelpiece, or sideboard, serving as classical focal points alongside minimal modern artwork and neutral soft furnishings.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid commercial liquid cleaners, abrasive polishes, and water, as moisture can compromise the delicate surface patina and accelerate metallic oxidisation.
