Description

18th century English mahogany tall chest in the manner of Thomas Chippendale. The top is nicely finished with a moulded edge over a blind fret work frieze. There are two short drawers over five graduating long drawers, standing on bold, original bracket feet. The handles and escutcheons are also original. The colour and surface are wonderful. This is a very good chest that must have come from a top workshop

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Georgian style spans the reigns of the first four King Georges, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the gradual transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber.

Authentic pieces typically utilise solid timber and veneers such as mahogany or oak, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and traditional mortise and tenon framing.

Authentication involves examining the drawer construction for hand-cut dovetails, inspecting timber shrinkage and oxidisation patterns, and checking for original brass hardware or appropriately filled backplate impressions.

A classic wooden chest anchors a modern room by providing warmth and contrast, pairing effectively with neutral lime-washed walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary abstract art.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels away from direct heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
