This nineteenth-century oak settle bench follows an eighteenth-century country style, finished in a dark brown tone. The piece has a high backrest with four arched fielded panels, open arms with splitting and surface wear, and turned front legs united by a shaped under-stretcher frame. A removable cushion in a green print fabric with red, yellow and white folkloric motifs rests on the seat base, while age-related marks, scratches and losses are visible across the timber. Measuring 114.5 cm high by 185 cm wide and 66 cm deep, it provides practical seating for daily use. In a contemporary home, the bench suits placement in a hallway, kitchen or dining room as a traditional seating option. The rustic farmhouse aesthetic brings character to classic interior settings, offering functional use combined with period style. The solid structural condition makes it suitable for everyday seating in an entrance hall or living space, accommodating guests while contributing an antique aesthetic to the room layout.

A settle is a wooden bench with a high back and solid arms, originating in medieval Europe and commonly used throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to protect occupants from room draughts.

Antique settles were primarily constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak or pine, using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden dowels.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, historic pegged construction, naturally irregular wear patterns around the feet and armrests, and an aged dark patina.

Positioning a high-back settle in an entryway, hallway, or boot room provides practical seating while introducing rich timber tones to contrast against neutral walls.

Apply a clear beeswax polish periodically following the wood grain, position the bench away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, and dust regularly with a soft cloth.
