FAQs

Originating in France during the 17th and 18th centuries, the commode evolved from a chest to a refined storage piece. The addition of marble tops became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, combining practical waterproof surfaces with sophisticated design.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames such as oak or pine, finished with fine wood veneers like walnut, mahogany, or kingwood. Construction often incorporates hand-cut dovetail joints, cast bronze or brass ormolu mounts, and heavy slab marble tops.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joinery, old timber shrinkage, patination on the brass hardware, and the weight and veining of the natural marble top. Hand-carved details and period-appropriate locking mechanisms also indicate genuine age.

An antique commode serves as a striking focal point in contemporary spaces. Balance its ornate details by placing it against a neutral wall, topped with minimalist modern lamps, abstract art, or simple ceramic vases to create a curated contrast.

Protect marble surfaces from acids and oils using coasters, wiping spills immediately with a damp cloth. Feed timber veneers periodically with appropriate furniture wax, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking.
