FAQs

Still life painting gained prominence during the Renaissance and reached its peak in the 17th century with Dutch and Flemish masters who captured inanimate objects, food, and game.

These works typically utilise hand-ground pigment paints applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, often supported by a wooden stretcher frame and finished with a protective varnish layer.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave, craquelure in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, and historical pigment analysis under ultraviolet light.

Such pieces add depth and historical gravity when hung against neutral walls in living rooms or dining spaces, often complemented by directional picture lighting to highlight texture.

Preservation requires stable room temperatures, avoidance of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and professional cleaning by a conservator to remove accumulated soot and dust.
