Description

Original Vintage Maritime Harbour Oil Painting by British Artist Peggy de Brett

Brief Description:

This is a beautiful and atmospheric original vintage Oil on Canvas maritime painting by British artist Peggy de Brett.

This wonderfully evocative work depicts a peaceful harbour scene, with a collection of traditional fishing boats and working vessels moored alongside weathered waterside buildings.

Dominating the composition is a charming old steam vessel, complete with its distinctive red, cream and black funnel, accompanied by smaller sailing and fishing boats resting upon the tranquil harbour waters.

The artist has captured the scene with considerable charm and sensitivity, employing a beautifully restrained palette of soft powder blues, silvery greys, muted greens and warm earthy tones.

The painting is signed with the artist's initials, P. de B., in the lower right-hand corner.

An old handwritten label affixed to the reverse appears to identify the work as Exeter Maritime Museum, together with the artist's name, providing an interesting additional detail.

The painting is beautifully presented within a substantial, quality, cream-coloured wooden frame with a textured linen-effect slip, complementing the delicate colours of the composition.

This original vintage maritime oil painting on canvas is created by British artist Peggy de Brett during the mid-twentieth century in a mid-century impressionism style. The artwork depicts a calm harbour scene featuring a steam tugboat with a red, cream, and black funnel, moored vessels, stone buildings, and a cloudy grey sky rendered with impasto brushwork and water reflections in a palette of soft powder blues, silvery greys, muted greens, and warm earthy tones. The canvas is signed with the artist's initials P. de B. in the lower right-hand corner and is housed in a substantial cream-coloured wooden frame with a textured linen-effect slip. The framed piece measures 60.9 cm high, 86.6 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this fine art piece suits placement above a sideboard in a coastal retreat interior design scheme, adding an atmospheric maritime aesthetic to living spaces, dining areas, or hallways. The muted colour scheme and tranquil subject matter coordinate effortlessly with neutral interior decors and traditional or transitional room schemes.

Mid-century British maritime paintings often blend traditional nautical subject matter with impressionistic brushwork, capturing coastal light, working harbours, and industrial vessels in muted natural tones.

These artworks are generally executed using oil pigments applied onto stretched linen canvas or rigid board, housed within painted wooden or moulded gesso frames.

Authentication involves inspecting artist signatures, assessing natural canvas surface age and craquelure, and examining original framing hardware or gallery labels on the reverse side.

Position the artwork as a focal piece above a dining room sideboard, mantelpiece, or hallway console table, pairing it with complementary light timber furniture or neutral upholstery.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture or liquid cleaners, and keep the artwork away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
