Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Hand-cut drawer dovetails with slender pins: cabinetmaking before machine work.
Dentil cornice moulding: classic architectural detailing of the Georgian period.
Cockbeaded drawer edges: moulding style introduced to protect drawer lips from rubbing.
Pine drawer linings: standard secondary timber in eighteenth-century provincial cabinetmaking.
Shaped bracket feet: support design typical from the mid-eighteenth century onwards.

This Georgian oak tallboy chest dates from the 18th century and is finished in a warm brown timber colour with a rich polished grain. The piece comprises an upper section with two small drawers above four long graduated drawers, set upon a base containing three further graduated drawers, all fitted with brass swan-neck handles and brass keyhole escutcheons. The structure is finished with a signature Georgian dentil cornice moulding at the top and stands on shaped bracket feet at the base, displaying historic treated woodworm marks to the back and pine drawer linings. The chest measures 187 cm high by 103.5 cm wide and 53 cm deep, providing substantial vertical storage capacity. In a modern home, this practical storage item sits comfortably in a bedroom, hallway or dressing room to hold folded clothing, linens or personal accessories.

A Georgian tallboy, or chest-on-chest, is an 18th-century furniture form comprising two stacked chests of drawers. Designed to provide vertical storage while saving floor space, these pieces were a staple of British cabinetmaking during the Georgian period.

Georgian tallboys were primarily constructed from native woods such as oak and walnut in the early-to-mid 18th century, with mahogany becoming prevalent later in the period. Secondary woods, used for drawer linings and backboards, often included pine or poplar, fitted with cast brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian tallboys feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, thick hand-sawn backboards, and original brass hardware with threaded posts and cast nuts. Evidence of historic wear, subtle shrinkage splits along timber grain, and a naturally aged patina also indicate authenticity.

Position a tallboy as a focal point against a neutral accent wall in a bedroom or spacious hallway. Pairing the dark timber with modern minimalist lighting, soft textiles, and contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and current interior aesthetics.

Maintain antique oak by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers moisture and lustre. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinking, splitting, or fading.
