Description

A stunning antique figured walnut chest of drawers. This was made in England, we would date this to around the 1890-1900 period, possibly earlier.

It is of extremely fine quality, with a beautifully shaped front, sitting on a beautifully shaped base with bracket feet. This has a cross banded top, the drawers have lovely brass handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The figured walnut colour tones are deep beautifully warm, and the grain patterns are incredibly striking.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is superb for its age, with some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Figured walnut chests typically feature ornate grain patterns, book-matched veneers, and brass hardware, characteristic of 18th and 19th-century cabinet making.

Authentic pieces utilise solid oak or pine secondary timbers beneath finely figured walnut veneers, joined with hand-cut dovetails and pegged frames.

Authentication involves examining drawer linings for hand-planed marks, checking for period-correct brass drop handles, and observing natural timber ageing and patination.

Pair the rich wood tones with minimalist decor, modern abstract art, or neutral walls to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying periodic microcrystalline wax, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
