This “Manner of John Buncombe (Fl.1795-1825) - Silhouette Portrait of an Officer” found a buyer.

It was listed by Harrington Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An early 19th century coloured silhouette portrait of an officer, very much in the manner of John Buncombe (fl.1795 - 1825).

Profiles by John Buncombe have been prized from the early 20th century to the present day. His highly distinctive coloured renditions of armed forces personnel dating from the period of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, are often the sole record of the vagaries of individual regimental dress at that time.

The silhouette and frame remain in a very good clean condition throughout. Label for Rowley Gallery of Kensington, London verso.

A silhouette portrait is a profile outline of a subject, usually filled in with a solid dark colour or cut from paper, which gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries before the widespread availability of photography.

Traditional silhouettes were crafted using various techniques, including cut paper mounted on contrasting backgrounds, hollow-cut profiles, or paintings executed on glass, plaster, card, or ivory, often housed within simple wooden or papier-mache frames.

Authentic pieces from the Georgian era typically feature period-appropriate framing such as convex glass and papier-mache surrounds, hand-mixed pigments, aged paper stock with natural foxing, and occasionally period handwriting on the reverse.

These compact works of art integrate effectively into gallery walls alongside contemporary pieces, or can be displayed individually on narrow wall spaces, bookcases, or mantelpieces to add historical depth and graphic contrast to a room.

To preserve these delicate items, display them away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of pigments and paper, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and avoid exposure to excessive moisture or heat.
