Description

An antique Karachopf Kazak rug with sublime colour. A classic, early example, beautifully drawn, archaic, with great wool and dyes. Some old faded repair, corrosion and local wear in places, could easily be restored in Turkey if requested, but I like it as it is. A beautiful and striking, mid 19th century piece that should appeal to collectors or clients looking for a statement piece.

Deep cleaned and floor or wall ready.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karachopf Kazak rugs are distinctive tribal weavings originating from the Caucasus region, traditionally produced by nomadic and village weavers during the 19th century and earlier. They are globally recognised for their bold, large-scale geometric medallions and striking use of primary colours.

Authentic pieces are constructed entirely from hand-spun sheeps wool, utilising hand-knotted pile techniques on wool foundations. Natural dyes, derived from plants and insects, provide the rich, nuanced palette characteristic of authentic antique Caucasian textiles.

Authentication relies on examining wool quality, natural dye variations (abrash), symmetrical or asymmetrical knotting density, and hand-spun foundation threads. Genuine older examples exhibit characteristic wear patterns, oxidised brown or black outlines, and irregularities consistent with tribal craftsmanship.

An antique tribal rug functions as a grounding focal point in minimalist, contemporary, or traditional spaces, adding texture, history, and vibrant colour. Pairing the piece with neutral furnishings allows the complex geometric motifs and aged patina to stand out.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialised washing when necessary, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight. Using a breathable conservation underlay prevents slipping and reduces fibre friction against hard floors.
