FAQs

Nineteenth-century watercolours typically feature transparent washes of pigment on handmade or rag paper, often capturing landscape, genre, or portrait subjects with delicate tonal gradations.

Artists of this era generally used gum arabic-based watercolours applied to heavy-weight cotton or linen rag paper, frequently utilising hog bristle or sable hair brushes.

Authentication involves examining paper fibre content for rag composition, identifying period-appropriate watermarks, observing pigment characteristics under magnification, and checking for signs of natural ageing such as foxing.

Framing the artwork in a simple, neutral mount with a minimalist contemporary frame allows the historical piece to serve as a focal point while blending seamlessly with modern decor.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, antique watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight, framed with UV-protective glass, and kept in environments with stable humidity and temperature.
