FAQs

Nineteenth-century landscape painting typically focuses on natural scenery, often emphasising pastoral themes, dramatic skies, and realistic depictions of light and shadow influenced by Romanticism and realism.

Authentic period paintings were typically created using oil paints composed of ground pigments suspended in drying oils, applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas and supported by wooden stretcher frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting the type of pigment and ageing craquelure under magnification, checking for oxidisation of the varnish layer, and inspecting the construction of the wooden stretcher frame.

Pairing a traditional landscape painting with contemporary furnishings creates a sophisticated contrast, often enhanced by hanging the artwork against a dark or neutral wall colour to make the composition stand out.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity, maintaining stable indoor temperatures, and avoiding touching the painted surface directly to prevent oils from transferring.
