Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Publication line dated 1753 along the lower border: fixes the original issue date.
Copperplate engraving with fine cross-hatching: mid-18th-century printing technique.
Dedication and armorial crest for the Marquess of Granby: mid-18th-century patron.
Natural toning and uneven staining across the paper: long exposure to light and air.

This Georgian framed print depicts the racehorse Creeping Molly alongside a jockey, detailed text panels, and a heraldic coat of arms. The piece consists of a copperplate engraving on paper with black ink, rendered in sepia tones, enclosed within a dark wood frame with simple rectangular mouldings and visible corner joints. The item shows foxing spots across the paper, yellowed margins, and minor surface wear. The aperture measures W 27.5 cm H 28.5 cm. Traditional English country house interiors suit this framed print, making it an appropriate addition for a staircase wall or a study gallery display. The artwork hangs securely from a wall hook using standard picture wire.

FAQs

Georgian equestrian prints typically depict thoroughbred horses and jockeys, featuring detailed typography outlining breeding, ownership, and racing achievements. Produced primarily via copperplate engraving, these works served both as decorative art and as official documentation of equine pedigree.

Prints from this era were produced using handmade rag paper and oil-based black inks applied to hand-engraved copper plates. Framing during the period often utilised carved timber, gilded mouldings, or simple ebonised wood borders.

Authentic prints from the 18th century display plate marks, which are impressions left in the paper by the metal plate during printing. They also feature chain lines visible when held to light, characteristic of laid paper, along with minor foxing or age-related toning.

An antique equestrian print can be displayed as a singular focal point on a narrow wall or incorporated into a gallery wall alongside contemporary line drawings. Pairing framed prints with timber furniture or contemporary neutral backgrounds balances traditional motifs with modern aesthetics.

Preservation requires framing behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting boards to prevent yellowing and deterioration. Prints should be kept in stable humidity conditions away from direct sunlight, and cleaning should be restricted to dusting the exterior frame.
