FAQs

Miniature paintings executed on copper plates gained popularity during the late 16th and 17th centuries, particularly in Europe. Copper provided an exceptionally smooth, stable surface that allowed artists to achieve remarkable detail and luminosity using oil pigments.

These pieces typically utilized thin sheets of copper as the painting support, coated with a white ground layer before applying oil paints. Frames were commonly crafted from wood with gesso and gilded finishes, often featuring decorative moulding characteristic of the period.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the ageing characteristics of the copper plate, the type of gesso and wood used in the frame, and the pigment composition. Under magnification, craquelure in the oil layer and hand-carved joinery in the frame provide strong indicators of age.

Due to their small scale, these artworks work well when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement or placed on small surfaces where viewers can appreciate their intricate detail up close. They add a layer of history and character to contemporary living spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels to prevent the copper from oxidising and the paint layer from flaking. Keep the artwork out of direct sunlight and avoid using liquid cleaners on both the painted surface and the antique frame.
