Description

Antique Figured Walnut Chest-on-Chest, circa 1920

This elegant chest-on-chest dates to around 1920 and showcases the enduring appeal of Georgian-style furniture interpreted through early 20th-century craftsmanship. Made from richly figured walnut, it combines classic design with practical storage and a warm, mellow patina.

Constructed in two sections for ease of handling, the upper section features two short drawers above three long drawers, while the lower section houses a further three full-width drawers. Each drawer is finished in beautifully grained walnut veneer and fitted with period-style brass handles and escutcheons. The drawers are oak-lined, dovetailed, and slide smoothly.

The top is crowned with a traditional moulded cornice, and the base stands on shaped bracket feet, giving the piece a balanced and well-proportioned appearance. The clean lines and subtle detailing reflect the Georgian revival style popular in the early 20th century, with a focus on quality materials and timeless design.

This chest-on-chest is both decorative and functional, ideal for bedrooms, dressing rooms, or even hallways where extra storage is needed without sacrificing style. Its vertical form allows for ample storage without taking up too much floor space.

In excellent condition, the chest has been professionally cleaned and polished, with only light surface wear consistent with its age. The colour is rich and warm, with a deep, even tone that highlights the natural beauty of the walnut.

A refined and versatile piece, this circa 1920 figured walnut chest-on-chest brings traditional charm and enduring quality to any home.

The chest on chest, often called a tallboy, emerged in the late 17th century and became prominent during the Georgian period. It was designed to maximise vertical storage space in bedrooms while offering a sophisticated architectural facade.

These pieces typically utilise a sturdy softwood or oak carcass veneered in highly figured walnut timbers. Construction features often include hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and traditional tongue-and-groove backboards.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber grain, interior drawer construction, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and natural oxidisation marks. Hand-cut dovetails and uneven secondary wood linings typically indicate genuine age.

Place the tall piece against a neutral wall to let the rich grain pattern stand out as a focal point. Balance the vertical height by positioning minimalist modern art or simple ceramic vessels nearby.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking. Maintain the finish by applying natural beeswax periodically and dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth.
