Unusual Cut Silhouette Group King George III

19th century
Sold 20 December 2025 · Wigs on the Green
This “Unusual Cut Silhouette Group King George III” found a buyer.

It was listed by Wigs on the Green. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This very striking silhouette features 30 small head and shoulders cut profiles arranged mostly in pairs. It includes cut profiles of King George III and Queen Charlotte positioned centre top. The top row appear to be 18th century; the next row are early 19th century and includes two officers; the third row is late 19th century and includes a naval officer in a tricorn hat; the bottom row are clever little head studies.

An old hand-written label on the back of the frame indicates that this was a gift from a father to his daughter, Mary Witherby, in 1874. It seems probable that this was Mary the daughter of Walter and Lydia Witherby of Islington, Middlesex. Mary was born in 1862 so she would have been twelve when she received this silhouette. The 1871 Census shows that Walter was a retired law stationer and that the family were fairly well-to-do with several household staff including a governess for Mary and her younger brother.

The silhouette is presented in a handsome bird's eye maple veneer frame with an inner gilt slip. The frame had some old losses as shown.

An unusual and attractive piece of art that would be an asset to any collection of silhouettes.

Date of Manufacture

Wigs on the Green has dated this Georgian Silhouette Group Portrait to the 19th Century.

A silhouette is a profile portrait filled in with a solid dark colour, typically black, most commonly cut from paper or painted on card during the 18th and 19th centuries before the advent of photography.

Silhouettes were typically hand-cut from black paper or cardstock, sometimes highlighted with gold or ink details, and housed in wooden frames featuring veneers such as burr maple or rosewood, often complemented by gilt brass bezels.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut precision with slight irregularities, period-appropriate hairstyles and costume details corresponding to the late 18th or early 19th century, and aged backing papers or adhesives.

They look effective when grouped in gallery walls alongside other historical artworks, mounted against neutral or richly painted walls to highlight their graphic contrast and traditional frames.

To prevent fading and degradation, paper silhouettes must be kept away from direct sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations, ideally framed behind UV-protective glass.
