Description

Nathaniel Hughes John Baird (1865-1935) was born in Yetholm in Roxburghshire. He first studied under his father and then at the Coldstream Academy, Edinburgh, then London and later Paris.  He had his first Royal Academy work accepted in 1883 and exhibited at many of the principal galleries from that date including the R.O.I. of which he was elected a member. He was equally successful in oil and watercolor and a favorite subject was the heavy horse at work.  He continued to exhibit until the 1930's.  He moved to Devon in 1880 living at Dawlis.

The present work "Carting Timber" is a lovely atmospheric watercolour measuring 16"x 15". It is signed lower right with a monogram and is framed in a fine quality gold leaf frame giving an overall size of 27" x 25". On the back is a nice old label with the title "Carting Timber".

Watercolour painting gained prominence in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries, initially used for topographical mapping and botanical illustration before evolving into a respected, expressive fine art medium championed by masters like Turner and Constable.

Traditional watercolours were created using finely ground pigments suspended in a water-soluble binder, typically applied to handmade rag paper produced from cotton or linen fibres, which contributed to the longevity and texture of the work.

Authentic period watercolours often feature watermarked handmade paper, period-appropriate framing techniques, natural gum arabic binders that exhibit subtle gloss, and signatures or monograms consistent with recorded historical artists.

Antique works on paper add depth and history to modern spaces when paired with simple, clean-line framing, neutral matting, and thoughtful placement away from direct sunlight to preserve the delicate pigments.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, antique watercolours should be framed using acid-free materials, kept behind UV-protective glass, and hung in climate-controlled environments away from moisture and direct sunlight.
