A tsuba is a traditional guard placed at the base of the blade on Japanese swords such as the katana and wakizashi, serving both a defensive function and as a piece of functional art during the Edo period.

Tsuba were predominantly crafted from iron, copper, or alloys such as shakudo, and were frequently decorated using intricate metalworking techniques including inlay, carving, and gilding with gold or silver.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct metal patination, precise hand-carved detailing, correct metallurgical composition, and often bear maker signatures or school attributions within the tang opening.

Due to its compact and sculptural form, a tsuba is typically mounted on a bespoke metal or acrylic stand and displayed on a desk, bookshelf, or within a glass display cabinet as a focal point of historical art.

Preservation requires storing the object in a stable, low-humidity environment and occasionally applying a micro-layer of specialist museum-grade wax or mineral oil to the metal surface to prevent active oxidation.
