Description

This is a very high quality 18th century Walnut chest on chest. From Scorborough Lodge. All original as far as I can tell and this piece wears its age handsomely. Other than a very small loss to the cornice and signs of historic wood worm is the base of feet which we have now treated there are no major faults. The colour of the piece is stunning and all drawers open and close smoothly. For me the simple design is what makes this piece particularly good as it can really go into any home work. The other benefit which is rare with these pieces is there is no musty smell in the drawers meaning you can use it to store clothes.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A chest on chest, often referred to as a tallboy, is a two-piece storage unit comprising a smaller upper chest stacked upon a larger lower chest, widely developed during the Georgian period for maximized vertical storage.

These pieces typically feature fine walnut veneers or oyster cut walnut laid over secondary softwoods like oak or pine, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints and brass hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, patination on the drawer sides, iron or brass butterfly hinges, and period-appropriate locks and escutcheons.

A period tallboy provides functional vertical storage that pairs well with contemporary minimalist decor, acting as a statement focal point that contrasts cleanly against neutral walls.

Maintain walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the wood.
