A chest on chest, often referred to as a tallboy, is a tall storage furniture piece comprising two stacked modular sections, typically featuring multiple smaller drawers at the top and larger drawers below, popular during the 18th century.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, deal or oak linings, and solid brass hardware such as swan neck handles and escutcheons.

Authentic items feature period indicators such as hand-cut dovetailing, minor timber shrinkage irregularities, original or period-correct brass fixings with appropriate patination, and secondary woods consistent with the era.

Such a substantial foundational piece works effectively as a focal point in a bedroom or dressing room, paired with minimalist contemporary decor to highlight its historic character and rich timber grain.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
