An etching is a printmaking technique where lines are incised into a metal plate with acid, allowing the artist to transfer detailed tonal drawings onto paper.

Traditional etchings are typically printed on heavy-weight cotton rag or laid paper using oil-based etching inks.

Authentic period prints usually display plate marks around the image impression, distinct paper ageing, and lack the dot-matrix patterns characteristic of modern lithographic reproductions.

Such pieces work well when framed with archival materials and neutral mounts, adding historical depth and character to traditional or transitional spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight, using acid-free framing materials, and maintaining stable humidity levels to prevent foxing and paper degradation.
