An aneroid barometer is a device for measuring atmospheric pressure without using liquid, invented in the mid-19th century by Lucien Vidi, which revolutionised weather forecasting by making barometers portable and robust.

These instruments typically feature cases carved from hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, housing intricate brass mechanisms, silvered or enameled dials, and protective glass bezels.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-carved wooden details, period typography on the dial face, traditional brass fittings, and construction methods consistent with nineteenth or early twentieth-century joinery.

A carved wooden barometer works well as a focal point on a gallery wall, above a mantelpiece, or within a study, pairing effectively with both traditional dark wood furniture and clean, contemporary aesthetics.

Maintain the wood with occasional applications of appropriate wax, keep the glass clean with a soft dry cloth, and avoid placing the instrument in areas subject to excessive moisture or direct sunlight.
