Originating in late 17th-century France, the commode evolved from a chest on legs into a sophisticated low cabinet with drawers, becoming a staple piece in elite Parisian interiors before spreading to provincial regions.

These pieces are traditionally constructed from solid regional hardwoods like oak or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and often embellished with cast bronze or brass mounts.

Authentication involves inspecting the interior timber for tool marks and shrinkage, checking the hand-cut dovetailing, examining the patination of the wood, and verifying that the hardware aligns with period casting techniques.

Pairing this item with minimalist modern decor creates a striking textural contrast, allowing the natural grain and historical craftsmanship to act as a focal point within a neutral contemporary space.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the surface finish.
