Description

Great small size George 2nd / early George 3rd solid walnut chest of drawers. 4 long drawers with moulded edges, oak drawer linings and original iron locks. The chest stands on its original nice shape ogee bracket feet and has moulded canted corners to the carcass and a nicely moulded edge to the top. Most unusually this wee chest has a hidden drawer concealed in the frieze moulding of the top at the front as shown. The drawers have nice brass swan neck handles, most of which are original but a couple have had slightly larger handles at one time.

The chest is in very good condition for its age and is a nice mellow colour. It has been sympathetically re-polished.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Walnut was the predominant timber used in British cabinet making from the late 17th century until the 1730s, when mahogany began to surpass it in popularity due to the introduction of higher import duties on walnut and the discovery of mahoganys stability.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid walnut or walnut veneer applied to secondary pine or oak carcases, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer frames and backboards, alongside hand-forged iron or brass hardware.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, tool marks, secondary woods used internally, hand-cut dovetailing, and the presence of shrinkage cracks or oxidisation consistent with age rather than artificial ageing.

An antique chest provides architectural warmth and textural contrast when paired with minimalist modern seating, neutral walls, and contemporary abstract art to create a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
