Early 18th Century French Cedarwood Dresser Base

18th century
Description

Its unusual these days to find a piece of furniture that is so old but still in this condition. Yes...there are various stains and marks on the top surface but they've been there a long time and only add to the history of this very handsome piece.

Made around 1750 probably in Northern France. The base comes with original hinges locks and surprisingly the original key.

The shelf in the base is not original but was replaced some years ago.. The door key only locks the base and not the centre drawer . This is unlocked.

Inspection welcome here in Somerton Somerset.

This early 18th-century French Provincial cedarwood dresser base originates from around 1750 in Northern France. Rendered in a warm brown patinated timber finish, the piece features fielded door panels, long exterior brass barrel hinges, swan neck drawer handles, and a scrolled lower apron. The top surface displays various historic stains and marks, reflecting its age and long history. Original hardware includes hinges, locks, and the original key, while the interior shelf is a replacement added some years ago. Practical for everyday storage, this dresser base measures 104 cm high, 124 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. It functions well in a hallway, dining room, or living area to hold tableware, linens, or books while serving as a sturdy surface for lamps or decorative items.

A French provincial dresser base, or buffet bas, is a low timber storage unit originating from regional France during the 18th century. Designed primarily for dining rooms or kitchens, these pieces feature upper cutlery drawers above a enclosed cupboard base used for linen and tableware storage.

Regional French craftsmen utilised dense local hardwoods such as cedarwood, oak, walnut, and fruitwoods. Construction techniques relied on mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, decorated with hand-forged iron or brass barrel hinges and key escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular wooden peg joinery, and natural shrinkage across long timber joints. Long exterior brass or iron barrel hinges, known as fiche hinges, and period hand-cast brass hardware are key structural indicators.

Position the dresser base against a neutral plastered wall to highlight the rich timber grain and patination. Contrast the historic woodwork by styling the flat top surface with contemporary ceramic vessels, minimalist table lamps, or framed modern artwork.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber grain. Avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or adjacent to heat sources to prevent cracking and timber warp.
