A marine barometer is a meteorological instrument designed specifically for use at sea, utilising a compensated aneroid or mercury mechanism to withstand ship movement while measuring atmospheric pressure.

These instruments typically featured heavy brass or bronze casings, bevelled glass lenses, silvered or enamelled brass dials, and sometimes mahogany or oak mounting boards.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-engraved or silvered dials, maker signatures from recognised opticians, heavy cast brass bezels with patina, and traditional mechanical linkages without modern plastics.

Such pieces function effectively as focal points on dark panelled walls, within study spaces, or paired with other nautical and cartographic elements for a curated aesthetic.

Maintain the instrument by dusting with a soft dry cloth, avoiding abrasive metal cleaners on aged brass to preserve the natural patina, and keeping the unit away from direct heat sources and moisture.
