Description

A beautiful oil on canvas laid to board, portrait by the artist George Henry Evison. The work is a very intimate portrait in the French manner and captured brilliantly with a soft use of colour and confident brushwork. The painting is in excellent condition and signed to the lower right. George Henry Evison is primarily remembered as book illustrator. He was born and trained in Liverpool at the school of art, and after moving to London at the Slade school. His works can be seen in many books but he did also exhibit at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and at the Royal Academy. This is an unusual work for the artist and I think may have been something he produced whilst studying at the Slade School. The painting is framed in a very good quality modern bespoke frame, coloured beautifully to work with the piece. The whole has a great bright, fresh, playful look and is ready to hang. C.1900.

Overall sizes in inches including frame: 16 ½ by 18 ½

Date of Manufacture

Prometheus Antiques has dated this Antique Oil Portrait to the 1900s.

This period typically combined traditional academic techniques with freer, impressionistic brushwork, focusing on capture of light and psychological depth in human subjects.

Authentic pieces generally utilize artist-grade oil paints applied to stretched canvas or wooden panels, housed within hand-carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining canvas ageing, stretcher frame construction, craquelure patterns in the oil pigment, artist signatures, and the materials of the decorative frame.

Pairing historical portraiture with modern minimalist or eclectic decor creates a striking focal point, grounding neutral spaces with narrative depth and texture.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity and temperature levels, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning dust or varnished surfaces.
