Description

Large C.1930 Oil Painting “The Newborn Child” After Georges de La Tour – Fellman

Brief Description:

This is a beautiful, large and extremely decorative early-to-mid 20th-century oil on canvas, after the celebrated 17th-century French Baroque master Georges de La Tour (1593–1652).

The painting is a finely executed period interpretation of La Tour's famous composition “The Newborn Child” (Le Nouveau-né), depicting a mother tenderly cradling her swaddled infant. At the same time, a second female figure looks on.

The composition is particularly admired for its extraordinary use of chiaroscuro, with the figures emerging dramatically from the darkness and illuminated by a warm, concealed light source. The rich red of the mother's dress contrasts beautifully against the predominantly dark background, producing a wonderfully intimate and contemplative image.

Of particular interest, the reverse of the canvas is inscribed “Kopiował Fr. Fellmann” — Polish for “Copied by Fr. Fellmann” — apparently identifying the artist responsible for this period interpretation.

The painting also bears the inscription “G. de La Tour” lower right, acknowledging the artist of the original composition.

Executed on a substantial scale, the work has tremendous presence when hung and is presented within its attractive decorative gilt frame.

A striking and beautifully atmospheric period oil painting after one of the great masterpieces of 17th-century French Baroque art.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baroque chiaroscuro artwork is defined by its dramatic contrast between deep shadow and intense light source, designed to create a sense of volume, emotional intensity, and dimensional depth in figurative scenes.

Twentieth-century oil paintings were executed using oil paints bound with linseed or walnut oil onto stretched cotton or linen canvas, housed in moulded wooden frames featuring composition ornament and gilt metal leaf finishes.

Authentic mid-twentieth-century oil paintings display natural canvas aging, minor craquelure in the paint layer, era-appropriate canvas stretchers, and traditional joinery or gilding techniques on the framing.

Classic master-style paintings create an elegant contrast when placed above modern sideboards or contemporary mantelpieces, bridging classical aesthetic tradition with minimalist interior surroundings.

Dust canvas paintings gently using a clean, soft dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners, and hang the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, or direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
