The stick barometer developed from Evangelista Torricellis 1643 invention of the mercury barometer, evolving during the 18th and 19th centuries into refined domestic instruments housed in wooden cases by makers such as Amadio of London.

These instruments typically feature solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak veneers, brass or ivory scales, exposed glass barometer tubes containing mercury, and often carved architectural detailing.

Authenticity is determined by examining the construction methods, the ageing of the wood and brass, hand-engraved or printed paper dials, maker signatures, and the presence of original blown glass tubing containing mercury.

Mount the vertical instrument in a hallway, study, or library alongside traditional art to highlight its architectural form and historical character as a functional wall hanging.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and heat sources, secure the mercury column if transporting, and gently dust the wooden case with a soft, dry cloth without using liquid polishes.
