FAQs

Victorian landscape painting, prominent in the nineteenth century, often celebrated the natural beauty of the British countryside, particularly the Scottish highlands and Welsh valleys, with an emphasis on dramatic light and atmospheric realism.

These works were typically created using oil paints applied to stretched woven canvas, often housed within heavily carved, gessoed and gilt plaster wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, stretcher frame construction, artist signature style, pigment composition under magnification, and the age-related craquelure of the oil paint layer.

Placing a traditional gilt-framed landscape in a contemporary setting creates a striking focal point that adds historical depth, textural contrast, and sophisticated warmth to minimalist spaces.

Preserve oil paintings by keeping them away from direct sunlight and high humidity, maintaining stable room temperatures, and dusting the surface and frame gently with a soft, dry brush.
