Description

An outstanding antique teak military campaign chest of drawers, dating from around the 1860-1880 period.

The quality is absolutely amazing, this is a very smart and very useful item. This has lovely inset brass military handles, and lots of storage space, all the drawers have fine hand cut dovetailed joints. There are beautiful brass fixtures throughout, and this comes apart in two pieces for ease of transport.

We have just had this re-polished, it is in very good condition for its age. There is just some very minor wear and a few marks remaining here and there beneath the polish.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A military campaign chest is a type of modular furniture designed to be easily dismantled and transported by British military officers during the 18th and 19th centuries. These pieces were typically constructed in two or more sections to facilitate travel on horseback, ships, or wagons.

Traditional campaign furniture is predominantly constructed from durable hardwoods such as teak or mahogany, chosen for their resistance to tropical climates. Key construction features include recessed brass handles and corner brackets to prevent snagging during transit, dovetailed joints, and a sectional build.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-cut dovetailing, solid hardwood secondary timbers, brass hardware secured with slotted screws rather than modern fixings, and structural divisions that allow the chest to separate into distinct modular sections.

A campaign chest serves as a practical focal point in a bedroom, living room, or study, offering substantial storage while adding historical character. Its clean lines and metallic brass accents complement both contemporary minimalist spaces and eclectic traditional schemes.

Preserve antique teak by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Maintain the wood using high-quality beeswax or furniture polish applied sparingly with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
