FAQs

Painting on metal panels, particularly copper, tin, or brass, was a technique popularised during the Renaissance and later replicated in various periods to provide a smooth, durable surface that prevents the cracking associated with canvas.

These works typically comprise oil pigments applied to rigid metal substrates, housed within hand-carved, gilded wooden frames constructed from materials such as gesso, pine, or composition ornaments.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the back of the metal plate for oxidisation, hand-forged or early fastening methods, brushwork consistency under magnification, and the age-related patina of the surrounding frame.

Such pieces function effectively when hung in groupings on panelled walls, within studies or libraries, or used to introduce traditional character and texture into minimalist spaces.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity and temperature control to prevent metal corrosion and paint flaking, alongside avoiding direct sunlight and utilizing soft, dry brushes for dust removal.
