The banjo barometer, characterised by its distinctive shape resembling a stringed instrument, became popular during the late 18th century and remained a staple in British homes through the Victorian era.

Victorian barometers were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, featuring brass bezels, glass dials, and intricate hand-carved wooden ornaments.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-carved wooden cases, traditional mercury glass tubes, hand-lettered porcelain or enamel dials, and signs of age-appropriate patina on the brass components.

A vintage barometer can be mounted on a dark-painted feature wall or integrated into a gallery wall arrangement alongside framed art to add historical texture and academic charm to a room.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, dust the wooden case gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid moving the barometer without securing the mercury tube if applicable.
