Description

'A Treat From The Master's Table' by Arturo Orselli (Italian, 19th Century).

Italian painter, renowned for his genre scenes, Arturo Orselli presented a variety of characters, scenes of life in taverns, mythological subjects, as well as representations of gentlemen, horsemen and soldiers. In his paintings and drawings, Arturo Orselli multiplies the representations of wealthy people in richly decorated bourgeois interiors.

This is a fine example of Orselli's work. The opulent interior to the background boasts gilt framed parlour doors, ornate panelling and artworks. The humorous scene depicts a gentleman boasting the finest cloth with a gleaming waistcoat, cane and gold pocket watch falling from his pocket, gazing with amusement at his dog who is begging for sugar lumps from the table. Signed lower right.

The work is housed in a highly decorative glazed frame with low reflectivity art glass.

An extremely fine work.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century oil paintings encompass diverse movements such as realism, romanticism, and impressionism, characterised by the use of oil paints on stretched canvas, often housed in ornate plaster or giltwood frames.

Traditional materials include artist-grade oil pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil, applied to hand-primed linen or cotton canvas, supported by wooden stretcher frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave, age-appropriate craquelure in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and underlying preparation layers visible under magnification or ultraviolet light.

An antique painting adds historical depth and character to contemporary spaces, functioning effectively as a focal point when mounted on a neutral wall with dedicated picture lighting.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, protection from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the canvas and the gilt frame.
