The banjo barometer, characterised by its elongated shape resembling a stringed instrument, became popular during the late 18th and 19th centuries as domestic weather forecasting instruments evolved from mercury cisterns to aneroid mechanisms.

Victorian barometers were typically housed in cases carved from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring brassbezels, glass instrument covers, and porcelain or paper dial faces.

Authenticity is identified through hand-carved woodwork showing genuine age-related patination, traditional fixings, hand-written or engraved dial lettering, and mechanical aneroid movements consistent with 19th-century manufacturing techniques.

An antique barometer can be mounted on a neutral wall in a hallway, study, or living room as a focal point, pairing traditional wooden textures with contemporary or transitional decor.

To preserve a wooden barometer, keep it away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity, occasionally dusting the carved wood with a soft, dry cloth.
