Portrait miniatures evolved from illuminated manuscripts during the 16th century, becoming immensely popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras as personal tokens of affection or remembrance.

Artists traditionally painted these delicate works using watercolour or gouache on prepared surfaces such as vellum, card, copper, or thin slices of ivory, encased in protective metal frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining the fineness of the brushwork under magnification, the ageing characteristics of the ground material, and the construction methods of the period frame.

These small artworks can be displayed on a mantelpiece using a dedicated easel stand or grouped together in a gallery wall arrangement to create a focal point of historical interest.

To prevent fading and degradation, miniatures must be kept out of direct sunlight, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and protected behind glass without exposure to moisture.
