Description

An absolutely stunning antique figured walnut chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

It is of extremely fine quality, with a beautifully shaped front, sitting on short cabriole legs. The drawers have intricate brass handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The figured walnut colour tones are beautifully warm, and the grain patterns are incredibly striking.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is superb for its age.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Walnut furniture gained prominence during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prized for its rich grain patterns and warm tones before mahogany became the dominant wood choice.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames with decorative veneers applied to drawer fronts, joined using traditional methods such as dovetailing on the drawer carcases.

Authenticity is assessed by examining hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, period-correct hardware, and the presence of secondary woods traditionally used in backing and drawer linings.

Positioning a wooden chest against a neutral wall allows its natural grain and texture to serve as a focal point, contrasting effectively with minimalist modern decor.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, occasionally treating the surface with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicon polishes.
