Description

A lovely antique mahogany grill front marble top sideboard, made in England, and dating from around the 1920’s.

This is of superb quality, it has a gorgeous green marble top that compliments the mahogany beautifully. The central door has a wonderful brass grill with pleated gold fabric behind. This is a useful size with plenty of storage space, while not being to imposing.

We have had the mahogany re-polished, this is in great condition for its age, with some minor wear and patina here and there. The fabric also has some light signs of wear, nothing that detracts from the overall look.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Marble-topped sideboards and serving tables gained prominence in elite European dining rooms during the 18th and 19th centuries, offering a durable, cool surface for presenting food and silverware.

Authentic period sideboards typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, paired with heavy natural marble slabs, brass grilles, and hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawers.

Authenticity is assessed by inspecting the timber shrinkage, hand-forged or cast brass fixings, tool marks on secondary woods, and the natural ageing and weathering patterns of the marble top.

Pairing dark wood and classic stone with minimalist modern furniture creates a sophisticated contrast, allowing the historical craftsmanship to serve as a focal point in a dining room or hallway.

Maintain the timber using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicon polishes, and protect the porous marble surface from acidic spills by using coasters and applying neutral stone sealants.
