FAQs

French still life painting gained immense popularity in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as artists increasingly focused on capturing everyday objects, light, and colour harmonies with loose, expressive brushwork.

Traditional pieces typically feature oil pigments applied to stretched woven canvas or wooden panels, housed within hand-carved or molded wooden frames finished with gesso and gold leaf or metallic paint.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, craquelure in the oil paint layers, stretcher bar construction, artist signatures, and the age-related patination on the reverse of the frame and canvas.

An antique painting adds warmth and character to contemporary spaces when hung at eye level on neutral walls, allowing the ornate gold frame and rich textures to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Preserve paintings by keeping them away from direct sunlight and high humidity, gently dusting the canvas with a soft, dry brush, and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the paint surface and the gilded frame.
