FAQs

A slip top spoon features a straight stem cut diagonally at the top end, a design popular in England from the late 16th to the mid-17th centuries. Latten is a traditional copper alloy similar to brass, widely used for domestic utensils before the widespread production of steel and plated cutlery.

These items were typically cast from latten, an alloy primarily composed of copper and zinc, using sand casting or closed mould techniques. The surface was often hand-finished, and makers frequently stamped their personal touchmarks into the metal bowl or stem.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate casting irregularities, natural oxidisation patination consistent with age, and specific handle profiles such as the faceted hexagonal or diamond stem. Examination of the makers mark and wear patterns helps verify the historical period.

Displaying early metalware involves mounting it within a shallow shadow box frame or placing it inside a glass-fronted cabinet to highlight its sculptural form and historical texture. Pairing it with neutral backgrounds allows the rich metallic patina to stand out as a focal point.

Preserve latten objects by maintaining stable indoor humidity and avoiding abrasive metal polishes that can strip the historic patination. Gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth is sufficient to protect the surface from moisture and degradation.
