Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

The George IV period, spanning from 1820 to 1830, bridges Regency and early Victorian aesthetics, heavily favouring classical architectural proportions combined with opulent veneers like flame mahogany.

These pieces typically utilised a sturdy pine or oak carcass fully faced with carefully selected, highly figured mahogany veneers, featuring hand-cut dovetails and pegged joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed secondary timbers, irregular hand-cut dovetailing in internal drawers, shrinkage cracks in the wood grain, and historical patination rather than modern chemical finishes.

A substantial wooden wardrobe serves as a grounding focal point in a modern bedroom, contrasting effectively against minimalist white walls or paired with neutral textiles to highlight the natural wood grain.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer cracking, and occasionally apply natural beeswax to nourish the wood.
