Description

A wonderfully charismatic 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman with drapes to the background. Whilst in a dour position within both the seat and composition itself, the sitter's expression is rather wry.

The work is housed in a giltwood frame which has some knocks and signs of wear but generally presents well. A handwritten note is verso behind a polythene covering - largely illegible but those parts that are decipherable indicate it to be a prayer or prose in memoriam.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century portraiture shifted from idealised neoclassical representations towards a more realistic, psychological depiction of the sitter, often influenced by romanticism and later realism.

These works typically utilise hand-woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden frames, primed with gesso, and painted with traditional linseed oil-based pigments, housed in gilded wood frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, crackle patterns in the oil paint, hand-forged or period framing techniques, and stretcher frame construction consistent with nineteenth-century joinery.

An antique oil painting adds gravitas and depth when hung against richly coloured walls, integrated into a gallery wall, or placed in a minimalist setting to create a striking contrast between old and new.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity and temperature control, protection from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoiding moisture or harsh chemical cleaners on the canvas and antique frame.
